Gardening Tips for May

Northside Family Resource Centre’s resident gardener Emma O’Dwyer has prepared the following gardening tips for May for our readers:

-          Keep on top of weeds.

-          Deadhead spent flowers.

-          Sow broccoli seeds in trays for transplanting outside when large enough.

-          Encourage birds into your garden-they’ll take care of slugs and other pests.

-          Don’t cut hedges until mid- August as baby birds will have left their nests by then.

-          Plant purple flowers to encourage bees into your garden.

If you would like to learn more about gardening or to gain more information like the tips above Emma delivers a garden workshop every Tuesday from 11pm-12pm in the community garden in the Northside Family Resource Centre. The topics covered include how to sow seeds, grow your own fruit and veg, how to plant a container and how to make cuttings of your flowers.  Every week a different topic will be covered. Come alone and join in the fun while learning new skills.

If you would like more information on the garden or any of the workshops mentioned above please contact the Northside Family Resource Centre on 061 326623 and ask for Mary McCusker.  The Family Resource Centre receives support from Regeneration and the IPB Youth and Community Fund to run the garden.
